West Yorkshire Winter League Cross Country 2019/20

Race 5 Stadium @ Storthes Hall, 9th Feb

Sadly, as you are all aware, our WYWL race was cancelled due to storm Ciara. Third time lucky?  :)

Race 6 Stainland, Sun 23rd Feb, 10am

(photo Martin Wright)

A rejigged course due to the preceding week's (month's?, year's?) weather meant running up the log flume for the first time ever! Sadly, the river crossing was also absent for safety reasons. Nonetheless, there was a great turnout from Stadium Runners for the last race in the WYWL for this season.

On the day, Stadium were 4th overall. Vets were 2nd, Super Vets 4th, Females 8th & Males 5th.

Excellent work by all.

Final Standings

At the end of the 5 race series, Stadium were 6th overall, Vets 4th, Super Vets 5th, Females 8th & Males 5th.

Well done to everyone who took part.

If you are participating in WYWL, and on Facebook, then you should consider joining the WYWL Facebook group to keep up with the latest information:
Haweswater Half Sun 1st Mar & Windmill 10K Sun 29th Mar
The 13th race on the Club Calendar is an extremely scenic run around up in the Lakes.

The Haweswater Half follows an out and back course from Bampton Village (9 miles S of Penrith, 4 miles W of Shap) and passes along the shores of Haweswater in a remote and dramatic mountain valley. The hilly course offers an exhilarating run in unique surroundings.

On the day, you’ll also get a unique souvenir mug filled with piping hot tea and a piece of delicious flapjack.

The Club is putting on a coach to the race.

The race is full.

The 14th & final race on the Club Calendar is the Windmill 6. It is an undulating road race around the Windmills on the top of Spicer Hill. The route is an anti-clockwise loop around the windmills and taking in the breathtaking views across Huddersfield Wakefield, Penistone and surrounding areas.

There are still entries at the time of going to press - book here

Sam Eastwood or Jamie Brannan are working away on putting the Stadium teams together. More news soon. Thanks both.

Yorkshire Veterans’ Athletics Association

The Club is pleased to announce that we have affiliated to the Yorkshire Veterans’ Athletics Association for another year. This allows Stadium Runners over the age of 35 to compete in their YVAA’s Grand Prix and Championship races.

The Grand Prix is a set of multi-terrain, regional races. Each organised by one the the associated clubs. The races frequently attract over 200 runners and are a great social as well as competitive outing. Cheap too!

To compete, a one-off series registration must be completed online at least 12 hours before your first intended race. Online registration will go live 3 weeks before the first race (race 1 is 21st March).

The Championship races are mostly incorporated within Open events which are being run anyway. However they are nonetheless enjoyable. A list of those races can be found here:

Committee Vacancy - Social Media Officer

Over recent years social media has become one of the key channels of communication for the Club. The role of the Social Media Officer is to:

1. Manage public social media accounts (currently Facebook and Twitter) e.g. deal with inbox enquiries and share key information relating to training nights and events.

2. Manage the members’ Facebook Group e.g. sharing club related news and adding/removing people as per the membership list.

There is also plenty of scope for someone to make this role their own e.g. utilise other social media platforms such as Instagram.

Attendance at committee meetings is essential. The committee meets every 4- 6 weeks following the training run, this is likely to be on a Thursday night going forward.

Please consider whether you could offer some time and expertise for the benefit of your Club.

If this is a role that you would be interested in taking up please speak to our Chair Rob Buchanan.

I’m also happy to have a chat with anyone who just wants to find out more.

Committee Announcement
I wanted to let club members know that I have decided not to stand as chair at the next AGM. I've done it for a couple of years now and I'd like to give someone else a go. I'm certain that we will find a replacement but in the interests of openness and transparency, I wanted everyone to know what was happening.
As a member of the club, you are all very welcome to get involved on the committee and the work that surrounds it, ensuring that the club operates smoothly. The new chair could be someone that is already involved but it doesn't have to be, it isn't a complicated role, you really just need to have some passion for the club and be prepared to give up a little bit of your time. If you think you might be interested then feel free to contact me if you have any questions or speak to one of the other committee members, I'm sure any one of them would be happy to help.
Social Events

Jonny & Nicki have been very busy organising things for us to do when not running.

Sun 29th Mar, 6pm

To celebrate the final race of the championship, the Windmill 6, and also to rejoice about the start of British Summertime, Nicki & Jonny are organising a meal at LaLa's Indian restaurant in St Georges Square.

Sat 18th April 2020
Awards Night 2020 will be held at Fixby Hall Golf Club. It is going to be a night of glitz & glamour - no lycra allowed. Dig out your best frock & dancing shoes (not you Jonny!) and prepare to wow your fellow club mates. Tickets are £30 and this includes a 3 course meal, awards and a DJ until late.

The Championship is hotting up - get your tickets soon to secure your place...maybe you'll have won a trophy!

Tickets available from Nicki or Jonny Cartwright on a club night or email
Stadium Runners Meetings

Some dates for your diaries!

1. Next Committee Meeting - Thursday 19th March 8:15pm following the training run (reminder: all members are welcome to attend committee meetings).

2. Annual General Meeting - Thursday 23rd April 8:15pm following the training run, which will include:
- a report on the Club’s progress over the last year
- the election of individuals to take the various Committee positions for the next year
- an open discussion for members to raise any issues about the Club that you wish
- and most importantly, light refreshments!

Please make a note of the date and try to attend the AGM. Stadium Runners is your Club and it is your ideas and input that help it work so well!
