[Stadium Runners] Newsletter - January 2024

Hi Mark

Happy New Year

Welcome to the Stadium Runners Newsletter. We hope to keep you informed about what has happened and what will be happening in the wonderful world of Stadium Runners. Please contact me if it is still being marked as spam for you and I will try and help to resolve the problem.
From Monday 4th December 2023 onwards our runs will be from KAL's Huddersfield Leisure Centre on Spring Grove St. We will meet in the foyer before our runs. We can use the toilets & the changing rooms. The car parks are free after 6pm.
Sun 17th Dec, 10th Club Championship Race  - Denby Dale Travellers 6

First time on the Club calendar for this race (I think), but as it clashed with the last WYWL race before Christmas at Bramley, perhaps not surprising. A hilly road race with not much flat, it features an uphill start and a downhill finish. Nine Stadium runners left the x-talons at home and opted for this race (and the super post race buffet) instead:
Pos Name Cat Time Cat Pos
8 Henry Carter M 38.11
36 Mark Davies MV60 44.04 3rd MV60
54 Lynn Birchall FV50 47.16 2nd FV50
55 Ian Whalley MV35 47.21
124 Michelle Haigh FV40 56.37
139 Kathy Armitage FV50 58.55
141 Robert Haigh MV50 59.02
158 Fiona Willis FV60 61.36 2nd FV60
162 John Cottam MV65 62.48
Brilliant running everyone.
Sun 17th Nov, WYWL 3 - Bramley
Unfortunately, there was a bit of an issue with the marshaling and the taping out on the course, resulting in many runners missing out part of the course, or repeating it more than once. Also, the system for scanning the wristbands at the finish failed, so there were no finishing positions available.

The organisers put a lot of effort into reviewing finish videos and Strava to try and resolve the problems, but in the end, the decision was taken to void the result.

It will not count towards the seasons results, and scores will now be the best 5 out of 7 races.

This race will still count towards a qualification for a buff.

Well done to the Stadium Runners who took part.

In parkrun, if you don't have your Club set to Stadium Runners - and why wouldn't you? - then your chances of your results appearing in this section are much reduced. You can amend this by editing the Groups option in your parkrun profile.
Run Leader Rota

The latest Rota for Jan - Mar is available here.

We have decided to christen the last Thursday of each month Step Up Thursday. The idea is that Bronze runners should think about stepping up to Silver, and Silver runners should think about stepping up to Gold. The Run Leaders will plan routes with this in mind (honest!) and will look after you, as ever.

On Thursday 25th & Monday 25th Jan GoodGym will be collecting old trainers for JogOn - please see the full article later on.

We are having issues filling the Gold Leader spot on Mondays when Simon Courtney is running one of his increasingly popular Development sessions. Also many usual Gold runners prefer to attend the Development sessions, so Gold attendance is usually low. So we have taken the decision to cancel the Gold runs when this situation occurs.

We want to stress that the Development sessions are suitable for all Bronze, Silver & Gold runners, it's just that the knock on effects of its popularity are only affecting Gold runs (at the moment).

Full results & standings are on the website here. Mark Davies and Kathy Armitage are still leading both the Grand Prix & WAVA competitions, but other Stadium Runners are closing in.

The Liversedge Half on Sun 3rd March has been added to the calendar - though this does clash with the Ian Roberts Memorial Fell race that is already on the calendar.

Both races at Dentdale on Sat 9th March are now on the calendar - the longer 14.2m & the shorter 7.9m.

10 races gone, still 5 races left - get those races booked.

Oakwell Hall parkrun is now back on with a modified course, so all set for Sat 13th Jan.

Hoppits Hill Fell Race will be on Sun 25th Feb, but it does clash with WYWL at Stainland.

JogOn
JogOn is a small charity with a big mission….to prevent millions of old running shoes ending up in landfill.

Over 18 billion pairs of running shoes are sold worldwide every year, the vast majority of these eventually end up in landfill. As all runners know shoes that have been retired from running often have a lot of life left in them.

Working with collection, logistics and distribution partners JogOn aims to get one million pairs of these perfectly good running shoes on to the feet of people around the world who have no shoes and suffer from foot disease.

GoodGym Huddersfield is working with JogOn to collect old shoes from runners on Thursday 25th and Monday 29th of January. Members of GoodGym Huddersfield will be coming along to the Stadium Runners sessions to collect your shoes.

All you need to do is bring your old shoes along, paired up by tying the laces together. GoodGym will collect them, package them all up and send them off to JogOn for a new life on a pair of feet which really need them.

Most runners have at least one pair of unused old shoes at home so please look them out and bring them along. Probably not the pair you use for painting or gardening, or your ancient trail running shoes with holes in them, but any pairs that are still usable will be gratefully received and repurposed by JogOn.

We’ll look forward to seeing you and your shoes on 25th and 29th of January. In the meantime if you have any questions please email saul@goodgym.org
