A couple of weeks ago, husband Chris and I decided to pop along to Cresswells Urban Fell Race , the ad said a twisting winding route, 3 miles, 1000 ft climbing around the steps and ginnals of Hebden Bridge. Sounded fun for a late summer Tues evening ! The start was on the cobbled bridge opposite the famous also cobbled climb up out of HB, known as the Buttress as in the well known mountain bike challenge /climb, where crazy cyclists bust their lungs and legs to get to the top in the quickest time. Our very own crazy cyclist Saul came 3rd this year only a few days previous! Not a huge turn out for this little run but the ones that were there , including 'our' Stadium Runner Martin Wright, looked like 'proper' fell running types! Off we went and straight up the buttress, and carried on up and up , a few female mountain goats passed me and then we went up a bit more to the pretty village of Heptonstall, where we finally peeled off on to a track and a lovely steep wooded descent, back out onto the road where I zoomed passed those mountain goats from earlier, the race continued up and down, skirting the edge of Hard Castle Craggs ,steep steps and cobbles galore ! Now as I passed a group of lovely spectators they shouted ' First Lady ' to me, not sure how that happened as I knew a very good runner was ahead of me, maybe she had got lost!! That would be awful but I only worried for a few seconds as I approached the cobbled bridge and the finish line I could see she had already finished as had hubby Chris in a very respectful 7th place, I was 2nd lady even though First Lady took a detour, she would have beaten me anyway, I won a bottle of beer and a nice glass full of sweets x 2 as I was first vet lady too, all that for a fiver to enter, chip timing too !! I loved the race even though it was probably the hardest 3 miles I've ever run ! If they do it again next year , I would thoroughly recommend it.
