Hi Mark

Welcome to the Stadium Runners Newsletter. We hope to keep you informed about what has happened and what will be happening in the wonderful world of Stadium Runners. Please contact me if it is still being marked as spam for you and I will try and help to resolve the problem.

In parkrun, if you don't have your Club set to Stadium Runners - and why wouldn't you? - then your chances of your results appearing in this section are much reduced. You can amend this by editing the Groups option in your parkrun profile.
Run Leader Rota

The latest Rota for Oct - Dec is available here.

The following events have been arranged for your delight this quarter:
  • Halloween Run on Thu 2nd November
  • Lunar Relay on Thu 23rd November
  • Christmas Run Thu 21st December
We are having issues filling the Gold Leader spot on Mondays when Simon Courtney is running one of his increasingly popular Development sessions. Also many usual Gold runners prefer to attend the Development sessions, so Gold attendance is usually low. So we have taken the decision to cancel the Gold runs when this situation occurs.

We want to stress that the Development sessions are suitable for all Bronze, Silver & Gold runners, it's just that the knock on effects of its popularity are only affecting Gold runs (at the moment).
West Yorkshire Winter League
First race of the season is at Baildon at 10:30am on Sun 19th November - a jolly run around on top of the moors. OK, big climb to get up there, and big descent at the end :)

Oakwell Hall parkrun is now back on with a modified course, so all set for Sat 6th Jan.

My Story by Simon Gudgeon aged 55 ¾

I joined Stadium Runners in 2017 and very quickly came to love the club, its brilliant people and the wide range of club runs and events. I particularly liked the fact that and you were always running in different areas and with different run leaders meaning no two runs were the same. Fast forward 3 years and while unofficially “helping out” at the back of a run, one of the run leaders said to me “you should go for run leader, you’d be good at it”.

That got me thinking and after much (actually, a lot of) procrastination, I booked on a course which by then had switched from in-person to online. The course was much easier than I expected and so interesting; I learned so much. After completing the online training, I was assessed while leading a mock session and finally did an online group session.  The course was then passed and the wait for the official license to arrive seemed to take forever as I was eager to get started.

In my experience leading a group is one of the most rewarding things you can do. To plan a route then lead your runners round it is awesome and people are so appreciative of your efforts. I’ve been able to learn so much from more experienced run leaders and very lucky to have led some of our annual events such as the Ice Cream run and the Christmas run where I had a chance to give the run my own little twist.

If you’re thinking by now that this article looks like a poorly disguised run leader recruitment drive then of course you’d be right! We always need new run leaders to replace those leaving the club or just stepping down for a while. Anouska and I are the clubs run leader coordinators and one of our roles is to guide people through the stages of training and to support them afterwards. Becoming a run leader isn’t difficult and there is no pressure on run leaders. You don’t have to be a fast runner either. Hopefully by now at least one or two if you might be curious so here are a few answers to some questions you may have:

How long does it take to become a run leader?
The online course is in modules, each one taking 1-2 hours and can be done at your own pace.
How much does it cost?
Nothing, the club will reimburse you for the cost.
Do you have to do the pre-run brief?
No, unless you want to.
Do you have to lead the warm-up?
No, unless you want to.
What if I’m not confident enough to plan a route?
Leading a run isn’t compulsory, indeed some of our current run leaders prefer to assist only, which usually means running with the tail runner and supporting them.
Do I have to lead a certain number of runs?
No, each quarter you will be sent a survey to indicate your availability and how many runs you are prepared to lead and assist.
Do I have to buy any kit?
No, the club will equip you.

Please consider getting involved as a run leader. If you want to know more then speak to myself or Anouska.  You certainly won’t regret it.
