[Stadium Runners] Newsletter - November 2020

Hi

Welcome to the Stadium Runners Newsletter. We hope to keep you informed about what has happened and what will be happening in the wonderful world of Stadium Runners. Please contact me if it is still being marked as spam for you and I will try and help to resolve the problem.
Training Nights
Our Bronze, Silver and Gold Groups have resumed on a Monday and Thursday night at 6:30pm. The sessions are currently open to affiliated Stadium Runners only (those that have renewed their membership with our Membership Secretary Alison Cottam).

Each group will have a maximum of 12 participants (1 Run Leader and 11 members). We are following guidance from our National Governing Body UK Athletics who state that in England, groups of up to 12 people can run together in a ‘Covid secure’ environment. We have completed a risk assessment and assigned a Lead (Rob Buchanan) who is happy to answer any Covid-related queries.

For the period up to the end of December Stadium Runners will operate independently from KAL for Covid risk management purposes. We are now meeting in front of the ticket office at the main entrance to the football stadium. This will provide us with a little bit of shelter from the elements during the winter months ahead. Please be aware that you will not have access to KAL facilities (toilets/changing rooms), so make sure you arrive at training ready to run.

We ask that you conform to current social distance and hygiene guidance during training and please do not attend if you or anyone in your household is displaying Covid symptoms.

How to Book:

For the months of October - December the Bronze, Silver and Gold Groups will be free of charge to affiliated Stadium Runners. It will not matter whether you are a KAL member or not.

We are using the ‘RunTogether’ booking platform. You will need to register an account with them in order to book onto sessions. You can do this by clicking on the following link:

https://groups.runtogether.co.uk/Account/SignUp

We have made our sessions ‘private’ so that only Stadium Runners can book onto them. If you search the website you will not be able to find the Club and/or sessions. You will need to book on using the following links (we recommend that you bookmark them to your computer/phone browser).

Whilst training numbers are restricted, we ask that you only book onto one training night per week. If there are still spaces available on the day of your non booked session, you can book on and attend.

Please attend if you are booked on or cancel with plenty of notice (you can do this via ‘my booked runs’ on the RunTogether website).

Stadium Runners Development Sessions:

Stadium Runners Development Sessions take place on alternate Mondays. The sessions are £3 each to be paid on booking. This money goes directly into the Club.

Simon Courtney explains:

‘Aiming to improve your running ability no matter what your current level is, the Stadium Runners Development Sessions will help you to run more efficiently therefore making running easier, make you more resilient to niggles and injuries by improving the way you move, and challenge you occasionally to be comfortable with being uncomfortable which we know is important in order to see improvements in race performances or during other challenging runs. The content of the sessions will include running form work and technique drills, mini circuits developing strength, mobility and co-ordination, with some hard work included in the form of our usual track or loops out on the roads.’

As with all other sessions, they are only available through a direct link on RunTogether:

Finally:

It is great to see that various friendship bubble runs have been organised throughout lockdown and we hope this continues whilst training night spaces are limited. Please note that any friendship bubble runs are not official Stadium Runners runs and participants run at their own risk. We do encourage these runs to follow the guidance provided by UKA:

UKA Guidance

We hope the above is clear, but do do let us know if you have any questions.

Amy, on behalf of Stadium Runners.

Tier 3

According to this helpful chart issued by England Athletics, the change to Tier 3 should not affect our training runs, but obviously we will continue to monitor the situation:
Full England Athletics Guidance available here.
Running Milestones

Alison and John have brought the running numbers up to date and a number of people have reached milestones with the Club in the last few weeks:

Julie Wootton 500

Saima Hussain 300

Kathy Armitage 200

Andrew Doig 100

A brand new Saturday morning running group has started up - Rockhopper Running. This is being organised by Martin Wright, but it is separate from Stadium.

YMCA Runners HD3

Simon Courtney has a long established running group based at HD3 Fitness at the YMCA at Salendine Nook. Runs start at 6:30 on Wednesdays and cost £2 for HD3 Fitness members and £3 for non-members.

There are two groups T1 & T2.

Team 2 run between 5.5 and 7 miles, levels range from 10k runners capable of 48 to 60 mins.
Team 1 run between 7 & 10 miles, levels range from 10k runners capable of 35 to 49 mins.

They stick to well-lit areas in the winter (but I'd take a head torch if I were you) and head for more trails and tracks in the summer months.

If you plan to run with the group, then please message Simon beforehand to book a place.

West Yorkshire Winter League Cross Country

Here are the latest words from Steve Boyer:

I can't see us holding any events this year. However, the New Year might bring with it some changes that might enable us to hold races again.

In the meantime, best make your own muddy entertainment.
Yorkshire Veterans Athletic Association

As you may have seen EA has published new guidance for a return to racing. However as these are so tough to meet, particularly for off road events with narrow paths, stiles etc. it is unlikely that any further YVAA racing will take place in the near future.

Conditions require among other things, no entry on the day, staggered starts, conditions that probably only allow chip timing and sending out chipped numbers before races, no refreshments or prize giving and courses without narrow paths or pinch points. This on top of all the hygiene requirements around toilets etc.

YVAA 2020 Grand Prix Entry

Each month for the rest of the year YVAA will run a virtual race each month at both 5k and 10k and publish a league table of results. Just for fun, no medals and no costs!

Each month submit your best result each distance along with your GPS track on Strava (or whatever platform you use!) and we will do the rest!

Results will be normalised using an age grade calculator (according to the WMA Age Grade Calculator which can be found here -http://www.howardgrubb.co.uk/athletics/wmalookup15.html) and points awarded for the highest age grades M/F down to the lowest and added up to the end of the year - 6 races.

Age will be calculated on the 1st day of each month. Results will not be backdated into previous months. Open for paid up club members only.

More Actual Racing

Sun 4th Oct, Virtual London Marathon 2020. Four Stadium Runners opted to take part in the Virtual race:

Leo Timmins had to put a bit of effort in, as his Good For Age qualifying time was no longer valid for 2021. He decided to combine the virtual run with a real run at the Big Flat Runway Marathon at Elvington airfield. Needless to say he delivered a blistering run and finished in 2:52:25, which will hopefully get him a GFA for London 2021.

Ashleigh Greenwood also decided to double up, as she also ran the IGUN Nearly London with A Grim Twist Marathon. She was first lady and finished in 3:44:44, a brilliant time on a trail course.

Matt Pattison certainly approached it differently, taking advantage of the fact that you were allowed to add together multiple runs to make up the 26.2. He too trekked over to Elvington airfield. once there (according to Strava), he ran a 3.1m warm up, followed by running the Big Flat Runway Half in a superb time of 1:35:03, and then a 0.8m cool down. Once back home, he dragged himself out of the door for a final 7.8m run to make up the 26.2 total! The above doesn't quite make 26.2 by my maths, but there must have been another 1.4m that wasn't on Strava.

Mark Davies just couldn't drag himself away from the Greenway, so that's where he did his run. He started off from the Stadium accompanied by Gareth Eagleton for the first 7.5m (Gareth managed to get lost on the way back - not fit to be let out on his own). Mark finished the out to Low Moor & back marathon in 3:53:40. He also managed to raise over £600 for Prostate Cancer UK.
Sun 4th Oct, Big Flat Runway Races at Elvington airfield. Perennial marathon runner Joe Baker couldn't pass up the chance to clock up another. Joe sprinted round the Marathon in a time of 2:41:20, a 14:52 PB!,16th place and his 41st marathon. Steve Taylor surprisingly only went for the Half, but finished that in 1:36:55. Tom Jagger also ran the Half, finishing in 1:19:04 and 9th place. Luc Burnip ran in the 10K race and finished in 8th place in 33:51. Excellent work by all.
Sat 10th & Sun 11th Oct. Joe Baker & Ashleigh Greenwood had a busy weekend. On the Saturday, Ashleigh ran the SVN Cakeathon Marathon in 3:54:25, while Joe came first in the 33m SVN Cakeathon Ultra in 4:45:39. On the Sunday, they both returned to complete the SVM Cookiethon Marathon in 4:10:37/4:10:38. I think Joe is a bad influence, but he insists that it was all Ashleigh's idea.
Run Leaders Required

Stadium Runners is always very grateful to all our run leaders, new and not so new. Stadium Runners simply wouldn’t happen without the dedication and commitment of run leaders who regularly give up their time to ensure all the groups stay safe and have a fun and challenging experience. But particularly over the last few months, our run leaders have been fantastic and we owe it to them that the Club has been able to offer safe and enjoyable sessions again.

We are always looking for new run leaders and can offer training, equipment and lots of support. The chance to say “not far now” and “that’s all the hills done” and other well known motivational (but not always true) phrases.

If you would like to know more about how to join this amazing team, email Bridget at  libramac@me.com or ring me on 07540 434573
