[Stadium Runners] Newsletter - May 2020

Hi

Welcome to the Stadium Runners Newsletter. We hope to keep you informed about what has happened and what will be happening in the wonderful world of Stadium Runners. Please contact me if it is still being marked as spam for you and I will try and help to resolve the problem.

Important Notice regarding Covid-19:

Based on government advice, and guidance from England Athletics, all Stadium Runners activities continue to be suspended until the end of May. At this point we will re-evaluate taking into account the latest advice and guidance available.

To be clear, suspended activities include:

- Monday and Thursday training nights
- ‘Give Running a Go’ beginners course
- Awards Night
- Committee Meetings
- Annual General Meeting

Take care and we’ll look forward to running together hopefully in the not too distant future.

Cyber Courtney's Corona Coaching Computer Connected Classes

Simon Courtney is running online coaching sessions to keep you on your toes during the enforced break from training. Sessions will be delivered using Zoom, which is a free, multi user, conferencing service.

Join him live at 6:30pm on Mondays for a coaching session.

The link for the session may change on a weekly basis, so it will be emailed out to the mailing list & put on the Stadium Runners Members Facebook Group. A link to a recording of the session will usually be mailed out afterwards.

There is also a new video from Simon, a 3 minute focus on your middle - link.

Catch up on all the previous content and more on Simon's YouTube Channel

2019/20 Championship
The Committtee have made the decision to finish the race championship as it is. Not a perfect scenario, but they couldn’t see any other way around it. So the final positions are:

Grand Prix Men
Grand Prix Women
WAVA Men
WAVA Women

Full results are available on the Stadium Runners website - link.

Well done everyone! Commiserations to those counting on the Windmill 6 to get them into contention.

Lots of Stadium Runners have already been out and posted excellent 5k times on Strava during week 1 of the competition.Looking forward to lots more during the rest of May.
Ashleigh's Facebook Challenges

Those of you who follow the Stadium Runners Facebook Group will have seen that Ashleigh has stepped up to the plate and set a number of challenges to keep us on our toes.

There have been a number of Treasure Hunt challenges, asking Stadium Runners to go on a run and take pictures of various objects or places during the run. There was also a challenge to send in a pic of your favourite (socially distanced) place to run.

On the non running front, she has an on going competition to name the Stadium Runner from a selection of old photos that she has been sent. Tricky (unless they are all Steve Pickup).

If you are on Facebook, but don't belong to the Group, then I heartily recommend that you join. If you are not a Facebook user, then perhaps these interesting times are a good reason to give Facebook a go?

Big thanks to Ashleigh for keeping us entertained!
Strava

Many Stadium Runners use Strava to record their running (and other) activities. In these socially distant times, Strava can be a way to help you motivate yourself and keep connected with other runners.

On Strava, you can see all your personal runs going back over time, and stats showing what you are doing (distance, climbing, time) over weeks, months & years. You can compare what you are doing now, with what you, or other runners, were doing previously and use that for motivation.

And if that isn't enough, you can dip your toes into the world of Strava Segments. These are portions of road or trail created by members where athletes can compare times. You can try and beat your PR on a particular segment, or work your way up the leaderboard and see if you can knock Luc, Simon or Jamie (it's usually one of them) off the top.

If you have a Garmin, then these can be set up to automatically upload your activities to Strava - usually via a smartphone app on modern devices. I'm sure the same applies to Suunto's etc. If you don't have a running watch, but have a smartphone, then the Strava app is available on Android & Apple, and will do the same job of recording & uploading your activities..

If you aren't a Strava user, then maybe think about giving it a go and keep a connection with other runners? Free to join as a standard user, there is a pay extra Premium option.
2020/21 Race Calendar

Hi Team,

I hope you are all well!

I’m sure you are all aware of what impact Covid19 has had on races, our race calendar is no exception. The committee and I have had a discussion and feel it is pointless unveiling anymore races for next year until we know more as to how long this situation will last. It is an idea that we propose a ‘mini’ race calendar for 2020/21 concluding in March 2021 ensuring we get back to normality as soon as possible though that is purely in the planning stages until as a club we know more.

Discussions are underway regarding finalising this years calendar and I hope to update you all shortly.

Thanks

Matt
