[Stadium Runners] Newsletter - July 2019

Hi

Welcome to the Stadium Runners Newsletter. We hope to keep you informed about what has happened and what will be happening in the wonderful world of Stadium Runners. Please contact me if it is still being marked as spam for you and I will try and help resolve the problem.

Joe Percy 10K

There was a huge turnout of 61 Stadium Runners on a pretty miserable evening at Storthes Hall. Fortunately the heavy downpour just before the start passed over, and it was more or less dry for the actual race. Also it was considerably cooler than the last couple of years, which was a bonus.

We had really great results, with both Men's & Women's teams in 2nd place.

43 Kim Senior 00:50:04

Very well done to all who ran on the day!
Colne Valley 10K
Sadly I missed out on this race due to a dodgy ankle, but it certainly promised to be a cracking hilly route.

There was a strong Stadium turnout for the inaugural event which was number 4 in our Club Championship.

Top 3 SR males:

1st Jamie Brannan (1st overall)
2nd Leo Timmins (2nd overall)
3rd Joe Baker (3rd overall)

Top 3 SR females:

1st Lynn Birchall (10th overall & 2nd female overall)
2nd Ashleigh Greenwood (3rd female overall)
3rd Michaela Goodall (4th female overall)

7 members finished in the top 10 and we had 9 category winners (Ashleigh, Lynn, Liz, Bridget, Jamie, Andy, Jonny, Andrew and John) which is a great achievement! Thanks to the organisers for a great event, the club support on the course and Ashleigh for the post-race brownies!

The full set of results can be viewed here.

Eccup 10 Mile
A lower than usual turnout for the 5th event on the Stadium calendar, mainly due to competition from Endure 24. It was a warm morning (but fortunately not baking hot like the day before) , and a stiff breeze helped cool thing a little. The course was a bit more undulating than some expected, but it was a lovely course through beautiful countryside and round the reservoir.

The top 3 Stadium males were:

Position   Name Net Time
5   Simon Courtney 58:22:00
59   Michael Cottam 01:07:36
61   Andrew Doig 01:07:41

The top 3 Stadium females were:

Position   Name Net Time
267   Kathy Armitage 01:21:39
298   Bridget Hughes 01:23:28
439   Samantha Eastwood 01:30:42

As well as being 5th overall, Simon was also 3rd M55. Bridget was 1st F60. Full results are here.

The race was also the YVAA 10 mile Championship, and we picked up a few awards there as well.

Well done all.
Marsden 10 Mile
John Cottam's personal pact with the weather gods held true and we were blessed with a lovely sunny day for the Marsden 10, albeit a bit windy up on the tops.

234 finishers all seemed to have a very good time, and fortunately we only had one serious casualty - a lady who fell and injured her shoulder, but who is OK. Top 5 finishers were:

Pos Time   Name   Club Cat
1 01:05:08   Matthew Pierson   Stainland Lions MSEN
2 01:06:52   Tom Whitworth   Meltham AC MSEN
3 01:09:34   Paul Senior   Stainland Lions M40
4 01:12:16   Jonny Cartwright   Stadium Runners M45
5 01:12:40   Jordan Lister   St Albans Striders M35

There was a positive mountain of food which even 234 runners & Stadium helpers couldn't demolish - thanks to everyone who helped by baking or providing cakes. Big kudos to all who helped on the day and a massive thank you to John Cottam who organised it all.

We raised over £3,000 for local charities, and the Colne Valley Lions were so impressed that next year's event is already being planned for Sun 14 June 2020.
Endure 24

Endure24 is a 24 endurance race at Branham Park, where individuals, pairs or teams run as many 5m laps as they can. We had several Stadium Runners competing.

Solos:

Joe and Ashleigh (4th female solo) did 20 laps each to claim their 100 mile t-shirts.

Steve T did 10 laps and completed marathon number 62/100.

Dan N and Nikki did 9 laps each, a great solo debut from them both!

Pairs/Teams:

Avocado and Sunblock (Steve C and Jamie) did 26 laps between them and came 3rd male pairs team.

Sisters with Blisters (Jan, Caroline J, Anthea, Michaela, Cheryl, Lynn and Fiona) did 32 laps between them and came 3rd 6-8 female team.

Stadium Sisters (Jess, Amy, Becky T, Becky H, Kim, Rachael and Gill) did a very respectable 26 laps between them.

We had some members scattered through other teams so well done to those people too. Excellent work!

Other Races
The Comrades Marathon is an ultramarathon of approximately 89 km which is run annually in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa between the cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg. It is the world's largest and oldest ultramarathon race. The direction of the race alternates each year between the "up" run (87 km) starting from Durban and the "down" run (now 90 km) starting from Pietermaritzburg. Steve Taylor completed this epic race, an "up" run this year, in 9:31:55, and was 3979 of 19078 starters. Awesome! I believe he plans to go back next year.

Stadium Runners did the double at the Huddersfield Marathon & Half Marathon. Simon Courtney won the full in 3:14:23, and Jamie Brannan won the half in 1:27:36. Brilliant!

YVAA. Helen Clegg (92nd female) & Ian Sutcliffe (29th male) were the only Stadium runners to race at West Park, Leeds. Fiona Willis (28th female), Helen Clegg (36th female), Ian Sutcliffe (20th male) & John Cottam (119th male) represented Stadium at the Stainland race.

Despite being only two days before the Eccup 10, several Stadium Runners were at the School Run. Jonny (3rd) & Nicki Cartwright (9th female) were first Stadium male & females respectively. Full results here.

Brilliant work everyone. Apologies if I missed anything.
Club Racing Vest

Some of you will have seen a red version of the racing vest, if you haven't then here it is.
The red vest is a prototype, in truth it came about by accident but some of you have quite liked it.

Over the last year or so the committee have had a number of discussions about the colour of our racing vest. These conversations were brought about by discussions with our members, some people seemed keen on proposing a change to a red vest.

As a committee, we don't feel it is within our scope to make this decision by ourselves, we really want to know what the membership thinks. We do however want to make a decision one way or another. With this in mind, in the next few weeks we will send out a link to a survey monkey poll. It will ask a very simple question, would you like to change the racing vest or not. To ensure we try to get a fair representation of people the survey will ask you to input your name and I will personally monitor and collate the responses and anonymise them, so nobody will know how anyone voted.

Once we gather all the responses we will let all members know the final numbers and then the results will go back to the committee to discuss implementing the decision.

Once the survey monkey link is set up we will email it to all members and post it on the private members Facebook page. Keep a look out!
