[Stadium Runners] Newsletter - April 2021

Hi

Welcome to the Stadium Runners Newsletter. We hope to keep you informed about what has happened and what will be happening in the wonderful world of Stadium Runners. Please contact me if it is still being marked as spam for you and I will try and help to resolve the problem.
Important Notice: Change of location - Leeds Road Sports Complex for Thursday 1st April

Most of you will be aware of the little bit of parking chaos that we experienced on Monday night due to the vaccine centre car park.

As an interim measure, we are going to move the session on Thursday 1st April to Leeds Road Sports Complex.

We will confirm later this week what will be happening next week. We are hoping to be able to come to some sort of parking agreement at the Stadium but that will take a little bit of time to sort out.

We will update you later this week.

Groups for Thu 1st Apr:

Bronze: Cheryl Devine leads and Andy Pigg is assisting
Silver: Adam Goodall leads
Gold: Darren Earnshaw leads

At the time of writing, Silver is full (watch out for late cancellations), but there are places on the other groups.
Return to Training News

Please read the following information alongside the ‘Membership Renewal Information’.

Covid-19:
We are following guidance from the Government and our National Governing Body UK Athletics who state that in England, formal organised Covid-secure running activity can take place. We have completed a risk assessment and assigned a Lead (Rob Buchanan) who is happy to answer any Covid-related queries.

We ask that you:

  • avoid socialising before and after training
  • follow current social distance and hygiene guidance
  • do not attend if you or anyone in your household is displaying Covid symptoms

Training Runs – The Details:
Training nights will resume on Monday 29th March. The sessions are currently open to UKA affiliated Stadium Runners only until further notice. Whilst Covid restrictions remain in place, Stadium Runners will operate independently from KAL and you will not have access to KAL facilities (toilets/changing rooms), so make sure you arrive at training ready to run.

When and Where:
Monday and Thursday 6:30pm Location: John Smith's Stadium - top car park (between the stadium and the entrance to the old golf driving range)

Bronze, Silver and Gold Groups:
Each group will have a Run Leader and the Bronze Group will have a Run Leader Assistant, allowing for a bigger group or a slightly shorter split group if necessary. We hope to increase the size of the popular Silver group but need more Run Leaders to do so. If you’re interested in volunteering your time, please speak to our Run Leader Support Bridget Hughes.

Development Sessions:
This is a coached Development Session, which takes place alongside our regular sessions and is held periodically on Monday nights. The sessions are £3 each and are paid on booking. This money goes directly into the Club. Coach Simon Courtney explains:

‘Aiming to improve your running ability no matter what your current level is, the Development Sessions will help you to run more efficiently therefore making running easier, make you more resilient to niggles and injuries by improving the way you move, and challenge you occasionally to be comfortable with being uncomfortable which we know is important in order to see improvements in race performances or during other challenging runs. The content of the sessions will include running form work and technique drills, mini circuits developing strength, mobility and co-ordination, with some hard work included in the form of our usual track or loops out on the roads.’

How to Book:
We are using the ‘RunTogether’ booking platform. You will need to register an account with them in order to book onto sessions. You can do this by clicking on the following link:

https://groups.runtogether.co.uk/Account/SignUp

We have made our sessions ‘private’ so that only Stadium Runners can book onto them. If you search the website you will not be able to find the Club and/or sessions. You will need to book on using the following links (we recommend that you bookmark them to your computer/phone browser).

Stadium RunTogether Bronze Runs
Stadium RunTogether Silver Runs
Stadium RunTogether Gold Runs
Stadium RunTogether Development Sessions

Whilst training numbers are restricted, we ask that you only book onto one training night per week. If there are still spaces available on the day of your non booked session, you can book on and attend. Please attend if you are booked on or cancel with plenty of notice (you can do this via ‘my booked runs’ on the RunTogether website).

We look forward to seeing you all very soon!

Amy, on behalf of Stadium Runners.

Membership Update - UK Athletics Extension

Hi all

One of our members has pointed out that our UK Athletics membership has been extended to August.

However, due to the amount of administrative work needed, we would like to encourage members to renew as suggested before the end of April. This will help us get the majority of the work out of the way before the summer.

Things should go back to normal next year so it shouldn’t make any difference in the long run.

Whichever you decide to do, you’ll be able to run under your current membership until August this year.

Hope that helps, but please ask if further clarity is needed.

Thanks

Rob

West Yorkshire Winter League 2021-2022
Great news! WYWL is coming back at the end of the year. The new provisional schedule has been expanded to eight fixtures - even more opportunities to embrace the mud.

Even better, Stadium are to host the 7th fixture on the 13th (eek) of Feb. Not tempting fate here, I hope?

Keep the dates free in your diaries, especially Sun 13/02/2022, when lots of help will be needed to put on the event hosted by Stadium.
London Marathon Ballot
The public London Marathon ballot results have been announced. Congratulations if you have been successful! If you missed out, don’t delete that rejection email just yet...

We will hopefully be allocated ONE club place, but this has not yet been confirmed.

Once confirmed, we will have a club ballot to determine the recipient of the place. If you are lucky enough to have won a club place in the past, we ask that you don’t enter again.

To be included in the ballot, you must provide evidence of your 2021 rejection email, so keep your email safe and await further news/instruction.

Annual General Meeting and Committee Vacancies
Hi Stadium Runners

The date for this year's AGM is Wednesday 21st April at 7.30pm via Zoom, further details to follow. We were not able to hold an AGM last year, therefore this meeting will mark two years since we last carried one out. The meeting will offer members the opportunity to confirm committee members, receive reports from committee members and there will also be a question and answer session. You can send me your questions in advance or save it for the evening if you prefer. The meetings usually last an hour or so, it would be great to see as many of you online as possible.

We still have two roles on the committee that remain vacant, and we would really appreciate your consideration on this matter.

We are looking for a Social Media Officer. We communicate quite a lot of content through social media, and this has become a really important method of getting messages out to members and potential members. You would need to be able to dedicate a little bit of time throughout the week to ensure that the most up to date messages were available to everyone. Ideally, you'd attend committee meetings which take place every 4-6 weeks. The role can be made manageable depending on your flexibility and availability so don't worry about trying to replicate what currently happens.

We also need a Social Secretary. This role involves two main tasks, organising the annual awards ceremony and organising social events throughout the year. The awards ceremony takes place sometime after the end of the season at the end of March. You can ask other committee members to help out with tasks to spread the work and people have shared this role in the past, which seems to work well. Again, attendance at the committee meetings is helpful.

The club relies totally on the good will of members to get involved to help run it, we simply would not exist without people stepping up and offering a little bit of their time. If anyone wants to chat about either of the roles or you have a question about the AGM then please get in touch.

We are all very much looking forward to getting back running together again soon.

Liversedge Half

Here's an update from Roberttown Road Runners:

Sadly we have decided that we will not be holding the Liversedge Half on the 5th September, owing to the fact that there are possibly still a lot of Covid restrictions in place, and Leeds are holding their 10K and Half Marathon on the same day, coupled with the Wetherby 10K and possibly the Bradford 10K. We will be back (hopefully) in our normal slot in February. If you want to make a note in you diaries it will be February 13th.

Thank you for all your kind support and comments.
Cancelling A Booked Run On RunTogether

As a few people will have realised, the RunTogether platform allows you to accidentally book onto a run multiple times. Also, if circumstances change you may wish to cancel a previously booked run.

It is good to cancel a booked run that you can no longer attend, as places are limited, and you could be stopping someone else running.

There are two ways to cancel.

A. Log into your account: https://runtogether.co.uk - click on the person icon (3rd from the right in the red header) - click ‘my booked runs’:
Find the booking you want to cancel and click the blue ‘cancel’ button:
Or

B. Download the ‘RunTogether Runner’ app - sign in - click ‘my schedule’:
Click on the run - click ‘cancel session’.
The latter is probably the easiest. Just remember you can’t use the app to ‘book’ Stadium Runners sessions as they are private.

You can also download this information as a PDF - link.

Membership Renewal

Your club needs you!!!

Firstly, thank you to all members that renewed with us last year and have continued to support and run with the club during Covid and lockdown restrictions.

We are now contacting our current members and those members that did not re-join for the last athletic year to advise about renewal membership processes and let you know what proposals we have for running over the next year. Of course, plans may have to change, depending on how the pandemic develops.

As current guidelines are indicating that we can resume organised running from 29th March 2021, the committee have been undertaking some preparatory work to enable group running to recommence and have put together a rota to enable the three ability groups to operate led by qualified Run Leaders (RL). Within the Bronze group there will also be a RL assist both on Monday and Thursdays, allowing for a bigger group and offering a split where necessary.

As we are currently running as an independent running club due to our partnership with KAL unable to resume, runners wanting to attend the run sessions must be paid up registered affiliated runners with UK Athletics. This is for insurance purposes both as a group and individually, and to ensure we remain compliant with Covid regulated guidance. We hope that we will be able to resume our relationship with KAL as soon as possible. We will keep you informed about this.

New membership Fee

£30 for Athletic year April 2021- March 2022.

£15 of this fee will be paid to UKA for each person’s individual affiliation payment.

The remaining money will go towards enabling the club to develop running sessions and events that we hope will become possible to arrange, as we move forward out of the Covid restrictions.

All group running sessions, for registered club members, will currently remain free, but reviewed, when we discuss with KAL, our partnership agreement.

However, to help these sessions operate safely and be well organised the club are committed to investing in the required UKA training for all Run Leaders who volunteer their time to lead sessions. We also operate and administer the run booking app, Run Together.

To enable a good level of communication and keep members up to date with all the club news, we issue a monthly newsletter, including the Sports Shoes 10% discount code. We also have dedicated private members Facebook page and a website, which we are in the process of investing in and upgrading.

Other benefits offered by UKA include various discount offers, opportunities and promotions which can be found in their monthly newsletters that are emailed out and your membership offers discounts on most race entries.

In terms of running events for members, but dependant on Covid rules allowing, the club will pay and register with the West Yorkshire X country league, West Yorkshire Veterans league and the Calderdale Way Relay.

When we feel confident to promote races, we will also be putting together a race championship. It is likely to be a shortened season, but we really want to offer something as we have all really missed racing over the last year.

Registered members, for a small fee, will also be able to book onto the running development sessions that are offered currently on a two weekly basis which run alongside the regular organised run sessions.

Information about the renewal process will be sent out by email and for any new members wanting to join the club please contact the me.

Thank you.

Run Leaders Required

Stadium Runners is always very grateful to all our run leaders, new and not so new. Stadium Runners simply wouldn’t happen without the dedication and commitment of run leaders who regularly give up their time to ensure all the groups stay safe and have a fun and challenging experience. But particularly over the last few months, our run leaders have been fantastic and we owe it to them that the Club has been able to offer safe and enjoyable sessions again.

We are always looking for new run leaders and can offer training, equipment and lots of support. The chance to say “not far now” and “that’s all the hills done” and other well known motivational (but not always true) phrases.

This course is now available as a virtual course. England Athletics have announced a number of dates for a new online Leadership in Running Fitness (LiRF) course, and they plan to release more dates in the future.

If you would like to know more about how to join this amazing team, email Bridget at libramac@me.com or ring me on 07540 434573
