Hi

Welcome to the Stadium Runners Newsletter. We hope to keep you informed about what has happened and what will be happening in the wonderful world of Stadium Runners. Please contact me if it is still being marked as spam for you and I will try and help resolve the problem.
Old Colliery Canter 10m & 15m
A slightly smaller Stadium turn out than usual, plus double points available for both the 10m & 15m races meant rich points pickings for the dedicated Stadium souls who turned out on the morning of Sat 13th Apr. Steve Taylor also ran on the day, eschewing Championship points to clock up another marathon on his inexorable way towards 100 (his result is in the Stadium Runners April Marathon Madness section).

Yorkshire Vets Race 2

Honley

Only two Stadium Runners were at the 2nd Yorkshire Vets League race at Honley on Sun 14th Apr. Fiona Willis came 32nd female in 59:22, and Mick Lunn came 66th male in 50:09. Well done both!

Remember that the next race is on Tue May 28th at 19:30 at Kirkstall. More details here.

Remember the Yorkshire Vets League is those of us who are over 35 years old, you have to register at Yorkshire Vets League before you can race and it cost £5.00 for each race, paid on the day.
Stadium Runners April Marathon Madness
Sorry there's not a photo of Luc running at London in his Stadium vest, but they were all a bit blurry due to the speed he was going at.

Super Stadium runners ran marathons all over the UK and further in April, with PBs aplenty.

Bluebell Trail 10m - Sun 5th May

That perennial Stadium favourite the Bluebell Trail is the next race in the Club Championship. 10 miles of mostly off road fun, including a manic descent through the bluebell woods and the infamous river crossing to clean your shoes at the finish. Sadly it sold out long ago, but there's sure to be big turnout from Stadium.

Those going need to be aware that there are some road closures close to Heath that are affecting the local traffic and these will be in place for the next 10 weeks. You are only able to access Heath and the surrounding area for parking from one direction - West Vale/Elland. You are advised to set off earlier than usual as traffic in the area will be heavy. More details and maps on the SLRC website https://www.slrc.club/bluebell.

Lets just remind ourself of Darren's favourite memory from Bluebell 2016:

Calderdale Way Relay
A reminder to all those in the Calderdale Way Relay teams to make sure you have the necessary kit for the race.  Also details of the official Recces.
REQUIRED EQUIPMENT (to be carried by all runners)
All runners MUST carry all of the following equipment throughout the race:
  • WATERPROOF whole body cover (i.e. covering the torso from head to ankles)
  • Hat
  • Gloves
  • Map of the race route and surrounding area
  • Compass suitable for navigating the course (GPS type equipment is not acceptable)
  • Whistle
All runners must present their kit at race registration for inspection. No kit, No run.
Failure to run with the required kit will result in the disqualification of the whole team.

Helen & Ian have emailed all Stadium participants with the race instructions for 2019 (there is lots of important red text to read). All runners need to sign a registration form, which comprises of your name, address, date of birth, emergency contact no and signature.  They will bring the forms down to each club night. If you are a particpant and are not going to be at a club night before the race, please let them know so that they can arrange to get the form signed some other way.  This form has to presented at Race Registration at the start of the race day.

Official CWR Recces

Information about the official recces taking place on the 11th May 2019 can be found on the Halifax Harriers Website, if you've not run your leg before its well worth attending, suitable for all levels.
If you have any questions or queries about the race, please contact Ian Sutcliffe or Helen Clegg at rativision@ntlworld.com or on a club night.
Marsden 10 Mile Recce
We will be having a steady run round of the Marsden Ten route on Saturday 1st June for race volunteers and anyone else interested. Meet at Marsden Conservative Club HD7 6DF at 6pm. There will be free food after the run and the bar with real ale will be open. This will also be an opportunity to meet volunteers from Colne Valley Lions who will be helping on race day. To help with catering please can you let John Cottam know by Thursday 23rd May whether you will be attending. There is a list on the Club Noticeboard or email John directly on Cottam404@btinternet.com.

Stadium Runners Members Facebook Group

New for the 2019-20 season is the Stadium Runners Facebook ‘Members Group’. A closed group for affiliated members, with the option to join when you join/renew your membership (and you will be removed if you don’t).

When you complete your annual membership form, your email address will be added to our newsletter mailing list. This will remain the primary way of communicating with members (alongside the website, noticeboard/pre-training run briefing and public social media accounts).

The new closed Facebook Group is just an enhancement, should you wish to use it! (Sadly, you do need a Facebook account to access it). It's a forum to advertise/plan social events and runs, ask for advice/recommendations e.g. local races and gadgets, sell running gear, advertise race entries you can no longer use (where transfers are allowed).

Selfishly, this should also reduce the amount of work for me.

Members should have received an invitation via Facebook or email this week. If you haven't and would like to join, please drop me an email - amy.oatway@hotmail.co.uk

Run Leaders Required

Ever thought about becoming a run leader? If so, Stadium Runners would love to hear from you. Run leading with Stadium Runners is a rewarding and enjoyable experience providing a chance to inspire and motivate other runners as well as develop your own skills. You get access to:
  • free training
  • a qualification
  • equipment
  • great support and advice
  • opportunity for further training and qualifications
  • and the chance to join a group of experienced and supportive run leaders
Plus, you get to use the run leaders code – e.g. “it’s all downhill from here” (except for the big hill at the end that I forgot to mention) and “nearly there now” (probably a good couple of miles), or even that iconic phrase “’it it ‘ard!”.

You will be supported on your first runs by an experienced run leader and if you are worried about getting lost, you can always opt to assist an experienced leader who will help you build your confidence.
The course will focus on the safe organisation of progressive running activity and how to lead a group of runners of varying ability.

Topics covered include:
  • The barriers that stop people from taking up running, and how a leader can make a difference for them
  • How to plan sessions and deliver a safe and fun warm up and a cool down
  • The different types of activity that can make running varied and enjoyable
You may lead a group for your club and register with Run Together to deliver to new runners. Your qualification will provide you with insurance to lead a group within the limits of the course content. Leadership in Running Fitness will be accepted as a prerequisite course for the Coach in Running Fitness.

If you think you might be interested, speak to me on a club night or contact me on libramac@me.com or 07540434573.

Recovery Plans
Jonny Cartwright speaks very highly of Hal Lepic, a Sports Massage Therapist, and Jonny has passed on two articles from Hal that may help you with recovery if you are suffering with an injury.

Contrast Baths

Contrast baths are used to provide treatment that causes alternating periods and conditions of the blood vessel dilation and constriction at the injury site.

They should ONLY be used once the swelling and bleeding have been controlled

Contrast baths should be used from 48 -72 hours after following an injury. It promotes healing and aids in the absorption of the remaining swelling around the injury site.

The treatment should be carried out 3 times per day (in accordance with the table below) and combine it with non-weight bearing exercises, working within a “pain free” range of motion.

DAILY PROGRESSION OF TREATMENT

  Day 3 – 4 after injury
First 2 days of baths
Day 5 – 6 after injury
Next 2 days of baths
Day 7-8 after injury
Final 2 days of baths

Contributions are really appreciated: If you run with Stadium Runners and have an experience or observation you want to write about, please send it in using the contact form. Your entry should have something to do with running! It could be a race report, stuff about training or nutrition, a book review etc.
